Why Being Unapologetically You Is Your Greatest Business Asset

It always makes me laugh when people call me their “little burst of sunshine.” Not because it isn’t true now, but because it wasn’t always this way. In my corporate days, my old boss used to call me a “little ball of rage.”

That’s quite the transformation, isn’t it?

The journey from that angry, buttoned-up corporate persona to the tattooed, spiritually-connected woman I am today wasn’t some dramatic overnight shift. It was a decade of inner work—of shedding layers, uncovering my truth, and learning to stand in my unshakeable self.

When Your Business Feels Like Someone Else’s Dream

Let me tell you about my first attempt at entrepreneurship. Black, white, and hot pink branding. Button-up shirts instead of showcasing my tattoos. A carefully crafted professional image that had absolutely nothing to do with who I actually am.

I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t find any clients. Now it seems painfully obvious: I was putting energy into the world that had nothing to do with me. I was building a business based on someone else’s definition of success.

Sound familiar?

So many of us create businesses, books, or brands following the “shoulds” we’ve absorbed:

  • You should look professional in this specific way
  • You should talk about your work using corporate language
  • You should follow this exact marketing strategy
  • You should hide your spiritual side in business

These “shoulds” are shadows of societal conditioning. They’re not your truth—they’re the voices you’ve internalized from parents, teachers, peers, and experts who meant well but imposed their definitions of success onto you.

How to Know When You’re Out of Alignment

Here’s the medicine: your business will tell you when you’re out of alignment. There are two major signs to watch for:

1. The Money’s Just Not Coming In

When you’re doing “all the right things”—running ads, networking, creating content—but clients aren’t finding you, it’s often a sign of misalignment. Either what you’re doing or how you’re articulating it doesn’t align with your authentic self.

2. The Sparkle Has Faded (Or Was Never There)

When your work feels like flat soda—it might have been exciting at the beginning, but now it’s lost its fizz—something has shifted. As we grow and expand, continuing to do things the same way creates a misalignment that manifests as a lack of joy and excitement.

For me, my business had never truly felt sparkly. I was doing it wrong from the start because I was trying to be someone I’m not.

The Authenticity Revelation

I remember a time years ago when I was struggling with my image, polling people in my network before making a bold style choice, asking if they could still take me seriously. I was seeking permission to be myself, still trapped in the shadow of other people’s expectations.

But here’s what happened when I finally took the leap into authentic self-expression: people started remembering me. Someone who had met me three or four times before suddenly recognized me. My visibility skyrocketed because I was finally standing out rather than trying to blend in.

These days, I’m covered in tattoos and equally comfortable in a romper as I am in a leather pencil skirt. This versatility isn’t about fashion—it’s about claiming all aspects of myself without apology. About refusing to hide. About embracing the parts of me that don’t fit neatly into the “professional businesswoman” box.

The result? I became consistent. Whether you meet me in person, on Instagram, or at a stuffy networking event, I am the same person—tattoos, fashion choices and all. I might show up in a comfortable romper one day and a leather pencil skirt the next, but my energy and authenticity remain constant. I show up as myself all the time.

This consistency is magnetic. When you’re not wasting energy maintaining different versions of yourself, you have more to give to your work and the people you serve.

The Permission to Be Yourself

The most powerful thing you can do for your business (and yourself) is to be unapologetically you. This means:

  • Checking the “shoulds” at the door
  • Showing up exactly as you are
  • Accepting that this will turn some people off (and that’s okay!)
  • Trusting that your authentic self will attract the right clients and opportunities

When I began integrating my spiritual gifts into my work—bringing in messages from angels and accessing the Akashic Records for branding and later coaching—I couldn’t find any business model to follow. There was no template for what I wanted to create.

That’s the thing about authentic business—it’s often uncharted territory. You’re not following someone else’s map; you’re creating your own.

The Shadow Work of Business Building

Being yourself in business requires shadow work—facing the parts of yourself you’ve been conditioned to hide, deny, or reject. It means questioning beliefs like:

  • “I need to appear professional to be taken seriously”
  • “No one will pay me to be myself”
  • “My spiritual gifts don’t belong in my business”
  • “I should keep my personal and professional lives separate”

These beliefs live in the shadow, and bringing them into the light is how you become unshakeable in your truth.

For me, this journey wasn’t sudden. I didn’t wake up one day and declare, “I’m going to be 100% authentic now!” Instead, it was gradual:

  • Sharing a little more vulnerably and gauging the reaction
  • Showing up in new circles where I could be more myself
  • Stopping the competition mindset with other women in my field and embracing collaboration
  • Taking a community approach to my work

These small shifts accumulated over time, creating a snowball effect. One day I looked up and realized, “Oh, I’m here. I’m actually being myself.”

Finding Your Support System

When you’re blazing your own trail, having the right support is essential. This doesn’t mean working with just any mentor or coach—it means finding people who get you and your vision, even if they haven’t done exactly what you’re doing.

The wrong mentorship can try to force you into a cookie-cutter approach that will never work for your unique gifts. The right mentorship helps you expand into your authentic expression while providing practical guidance.

From Resistance to Flow: My Book Journey

My resistance to authenticity showed up powerfully in my book writing journey. I had been working on my “big book” Sacred Anger for nearly a year, filled with stories about what it should be and how I should write it.

Meanwhile, I had this idea for a smaller book which would later become Prayers and Prose – a compilation of stories I’d shared on social media paired with angelic prayers. When challenged to publish it in a single day, I did just that.

The experience shattered all my stories about book writing being difficult and time-consuming. It challenged my worthiness issues (“Who’s going to pay for this?”) and perfectionism (“Is it long enough?”).

By completing this project quickly and without the same attachment I had to my bigger book, I freed myself from the constraints of my own expectations. The result? I was able to write the rest of Sacred Anger with much less resistance.

Becoming Unshakeable in Your Business

Becoming unshakeable in your business means standing so firmly in your truth that external pressures—market trends, other people’s opinions, industry “best practices”—can’t move you from your authentic center.

It means:

  • Defining success on your own terms
  • Creating offerings that light you up as much as they serve others
  • Setting boundaries that honor your energy and values
  • Using your unique gifts, even (especially) the ones that don’t fit neatly into a business plan
  • Trusting that your most authentic expression is also your most powerful

This doesn’t mean you’ll never have doubts or challenges. It means you’ll face them from a place of alignment with your deepest truth.

The Invitation to Authenticity

If there’s one thing I want you to take from my journey, it’s this: your most valuable business asset is your authentic self. Not your marketing strategy, not your sales funnel, not your brand colours—YOU.

The parts of yourself you’ve been hiding might be exactly what your dream clients are looking for. Your unique way of seeing the world might be precisely what will set your business apart.

So I invite you to ask yourself:

  • What “shoulds” am I carrying in my business?
  • What parts of myself am I hiding because I think they don’t belong in my professional life?
  • How would my business feel different if I allowed myself to be fully expressed?
  • What would I create if I trusted that my authentic self is enough?

The journey to authenticity isn’t always straightforward, but it’s infinitely worth it. Not just for your business success, but for the freedom and joy that come from being unapologetically you.

Your unshakeable self is waiting. Will you claim it?
