Today I was having a conversation about an incredible tarot deck with one of my students, and I could feel her hesitance. She clarified, “this is a tarot deck, not an oracle one, right?” I was like “Yup, but you can use it as an oracle.”
Say wha?
Here is the thing: when we’re communicating with the divine, it’s all based on energy, and intention. The tools we use really don’t matter. When you have built up a solid trust in your ability to receive messages (or if you’ve never lost that innate trust you had as a kid) you begin to realize that you can use just about anything as an oracle. (Read about the difference between tarot cards and oracle card here.)
So first off – what’s an oracle?
Depending on who you ask, an oracle is either a person or a tool that provides a divine message. It’s access to God, and I mean that with both humility and reverence. I was actually surprised to find this definition by Merriam-Webster: an authoritative or wise expression or answer, but I feel it’s way more all encompassing of the power of what an oracle is. Unfortunately, we’ve gotten to the point where we rely on someone or something to specifically give us the guidance we’re seeking, that we forget it’s within us all along.
I get it, we all get comfortable with our tools and we have our biases (based on our experience or what we’ve seen in the media), about how the divine shows up and can work through us. But what if more was possible? Well, it is. Literally ANYTHING can be a tool for bringing forward divine guidance if you’re willing to experience it as such.
Quirky Ways I Connect
I’ve been thinking for awhile that I need to write a blog post about some of the quirky ways I’ve received guidance from my guides over the years, so this seemed like the right place to put it. While oracle cards are one of my go-tos (along with my intuitive gifts) here are some of the other ways I’ve connected with the divine that didn’t use any intuitive tools:
The wind in the trees
When I was a kid and was having a bad day, I’d go to the park and sit under a tree to just sit and be sad. I’d lay on the grass and look up at the tree and talk to God and the angels and they’d respond with the wind in the trees. Sometimes it would be yes/no questions, sometimes it just felt like a message that I wasn’t alone, and that I was supported. It was the exact comfort I needed during that challenging time.
The shower
I’ve talked a lot in the past about how I meditate in the shower and often receive divine downloads. (I keep a waterproof notepad in there so I can jot things down if I need to.) But sometimes, I’m distracted and I start thinking about my to-do list, or stresses… or sometimes what I’ve perceived as a download didn’t come through with the most clarity and my guides want to redirect me before I venture off on the wrong path. In those cases, they will change the pressure or the temperature of my shower to get my attention. (When you’ve been in meditation in a warm cozy shower and then get splashed with cold, you realign quickly!)
Video games
One of my stress relievers is this little block game that’s a cross between sudoku and Tetris. The rounds tend to be quick and if I’m honest, most of the time I score under 1000 points, ha! I actually use this in conjunction with angel numbers. I’ll set the intention to bring forward a message, play the round to the best of my ability, and then use the score to look up the angel message in Kyle Gray’s Angel Numbers book.
Unexpected Oracles
Here are a few different things you can use as oracles that you may not have considered before. Remember, literally ANYTHING can be an oracle, so if none of these resonate for you, try things out and find what does.
Music
I teach about clairaudience (psychic hearing) in my 3-month program Due North, and music is one of the ways someone can receive clairaudient messages, but this works even if you’re not actively waking up your gifts. You can set the intention to receive a message through a song, then turn on the radio, hit shuffle on your music player – anything random – and listen for what comes in. The message may be a lyric, it may be tied to a memory you have with that song, it could be someone the song reminds you of, or even what the band represents to you. It will be deeply personal, but if you’re open, can be a powerful tool.
My teeth
This is a type of muscle testing, truly, but it’s the quickest way I can get a yes/no hit from my guides. I hover my teeth close together and ask what is a yes and what is a no. (For me, my teeth click to the left for yes and the right for no. If they click in the middle it means I’m not focused on the question.) I then take a breath to tune in, ask the question, and see how my teeth respond.
Books!
This is a tool called bibliomancy, and when it was first used it was always done with the bible. While it can be helpful to have one book that’s dedicated to this work for you, I personally love diversifying the messages and use my whole collection of books. I tune in and see what book I’m drawn to from the shelf. (Sometimes I get a heat from it, sometimes I see it in my head, sometimes it just seems to stand out on the shelf.) Then I flip through the pages until my guides tell me to stop. I pause and tune in to see if it’s on the left or right page, and then I see where my eye is drawn and take the message from the page.
Tumbled gemstones
I’ve actually used this tool at events. I have a bag with tumbled gemstones in it and when you reach in, it’s impossible to identify one from the other. One of the biggest things I teach with energy is “the body always knows and the energy never lies” so if you set your intention to be what you most need at the time, your hand will reach for the correct stone. If you’re not familiar with the energies of your crystals, you can use a resource like Judy Hall’s Crystal Bible to give you an in depth answer of what may be going on.
Mandalas
Yeah, but…
Now, if you’re a skeptic, there’s maybe a part of you that’s going “Yeah, okay Seryna – but how do you know that was your guides and not just nature/science/etc?” This is where faith comes in. For whatever reason, even as a little kid I could tell the difference between a communication and the wind blowing, and I knew it to be true because it wasn’t just giving me the answers I wanted to hear. I’m now at a point where I’ve fostered enough trust and faith in my gifts and my divine connection that even the most cynical of skeptics couldn’t convince me otherwise.
Each of us is intuitive, how deeply we’re able to go with it depends on our willingness and our commitment – not on natural gifts… so start exploring. Maybe you receive animal messages, check in with automatic writing, cast runes, or understand the frequencies within sacred geometry. What matters more than the tools you use to connect with the divine is that you’re doing the work to connect. The how doesn’t matter, the doing does. So get into the world and start trying things out until you find your new favourite ways to receive sacred messages. (Then come back and tell me on this post or in my FB community what you’ve found that works for you.)
With love and magic,
