Loving yourself in a world that profits off your shame isn’t soft, it isn’t sweet, it isn’t some feel-good nonsense—it’s a revolution.
Let’s talk about having the absolute audacity to be yourself, to love yourself, to stand unshakably in the world, even though there are powerful forces outside of you that want you to feel terrible so they can make a buck, have power over you, and make you easier to control.
The Self-Care Industrial Complex
We’ve been having this conversation about self-love and self-care for over a decade in Western culture. But let’s be honest: much of what passes for “self-care” these days has been watered down into bubble baths, massages, and mimosas with your girlfriends.
Don’t get me wrong—I was part of that superficial marketing machine once, too. But what if we reclaimed the potent medicine of truly caring for ourselves?
Real self-care isn’t just about spa days (though they’re lovely). It’s about:
- Going to therapy
- Doing shadow work
- Moving your body
- Drinking water
- Getting enough sleep
These aren’t sexy, Instagram-worthy activities. But they represent genuine love and care for yourself. And here’s the revolutionary part: these activities are often more about space, time, energy, and effort than they are about expense.
When you hop off the endless cycles of self-rejection and self-improvement—those cycles where someone’s always trying to sell you that one thing that’ll fix all your problems—and instead choose to love yourself exactly as you are, it’s the most beautiful rebellion against capitalism and the patriarchy I can imagine.
Finding Your Centre in Chaos
We’re living in challenging times. Rights are being stripped away, people are being diminished and othered, and we’re collectively exhausted by politics, economic uncertainty, and global shifts.
If you can somehow put on the energetic equivalent of noise-cancelling headphones, find your centre in all this chaos, and not just find it but hold it—that’s a sacred rebellion.
We exist in an ugly Venn diagram of oppressive systems—patriarchy, white supremacy, capitalism—all with their own agendas, but ultimately sharing one core goal: keeping us from taking up space and prioritizing ourselves.
Why? Because when you’re not distracted by the next shiny thing, when you have space to sit, listen, observe, and watch the world around you, you become dangerous.
You’re a lot easier to control if you’re:
- In a state of fear
- Overwhelmed
- Burned out with no energy to fight
- So busy that all your time is spoken for
They want to keep you quiet, keep you nice, keep you in line.
The Boiling Frog
They take that metaphor about boiling a frog—you don’t throw it in hot water; you put it in cool water and slowly turn up the heat until it’s too late—and apply it to our rights, our sense of self, our connection to what matters.
These systems introduce small changes, little shifts that may not affect us directly or might not seem like a big deal… until they are. We’re distracted by the need to change ourselves, fix ourselves, buy the latest thing, and we don’t notice what’s happening until we’re in a hellscape.
We lose sight of who we are and lose hope for what’s possible. We watch things slowly devolve, and with it goes our belief that things can get better.
The Survival Self and Sacred Rebellion
This is where understanding your Survival Self Archetype becomes crucial. When you know which survival strategies you’ve been using to navigate the world—whether it’s people-pleasing, over-achieving, emotional stoicism, or any of the other patterns—you gain awareness that can liberate you.
I created the Survival Self Archetype quiz not as a cutesy BuzzFeed-style distraction, but as a consciousness-raising tool. Like the Myers-Briggs or Enneagram, it helps you understand why you are the way you are, see your patterns clearly, and envision what’s possible beyond them.
Because here’s the truth: you can’t make positive, lasting, deep change with the same level of awareness that created the problem. You need a higher consciousness to see both the truth of your situation and what’s available beyond your immediate view.
The Audacity of Self-Knowledge
When you know yourself—when you’re so deeply rooted that nothing you’ve ever said, done, or felt can be used against you because you’ve already looked those things in the face and reclaimed them—you become a direct threat to systems that depend on your silence.
Claiming your truth is political. Choosing joy, choosing rage, choosing rest, choosing visibility—whatever your truth is—disrupts the powers that want to keep you in check, compliant, and obedient.
And let’s be clear—they don’t deserve your compliance.
This isn’t about arrogance; it’s about divine alignment. It’s choosing yourself over approval, over anyone else’s opinion, over social convention, over everything else.
You Are Worth Choosing
Please hear me: you, beautiful soul, are worth choosing.
We have this hardwired biological need for acceptance and belonging—it’s how we feel safe, how we find connection. Often, we put this above ourselves, above our truth, above our need for alignment. And then we resent the people we love, live with regret, and become bitter and frustrated.
That muted, grey living is exactly where these oppressive systems want you—aching for a quick fix that they’re happy to sell you. But the only thing you need is to return home to yourself.
Permission Denied
No one is going to give you permission to want more, feel more, express more, desire more. If I could, I’d give you that permission right now—but ultimately, you need to give it to yourself.
You need to stop asking the systems that benefit from your self-doubt to validate your worth. They won’t, because it’s in their best interest not to. It’s like asking a thief to guard your house.
This is your invitation to look at where you’re deferring to others, asking for permission, trying to earn your worth through perfection, performance, politeness—and then practice being boldly audacious.
Make it a daily practice. Build that muscle so that every day you do a bit more:
- Stop apologizing for your bigness (literally and figuratively)
- Say what you need to say
- Honour your voice, feelings, and needs
- Express yourself authentically through your words, volume, clothing, and choices
- Choose carefully who you let into your life
The Anti-Costume
Having the audacity to be your authentic, unshakeable self isn’t a costume you put on. It’s exactly the opposite—it’s what remains when you strip off every mask, every role, every identity you’ve been told you need to wear.
Are you brave enough to try? No shade if you’re not—this isn’t what all of us came here to do. But if you’re ready to choose wholeness over harmony, this is where it starts.
You’re at the sacred crossroads of deciding that the way you were doing things isn’t working for you anymore, and you’re ready for something new.
